The Cause

2013 is the bicentenary of Dr David Livingstone's birth and we want to undertake an expedition in a part of the world where his exploration and work to abolish the slave trade were instrumental. We want to honour his memory and travel our own way along Lake Malawi to make our own lasting impression on an amazing part of the world that will greatly benefit from our help.

In Malawi more people are killed by malaria than any other cause of death (WHO) and the people who live by Lake Malawi and depend on its resources are among the hardest hit.  We are aiming to raise £50,000 in aid of the prevention of malaria in Malawi. This is equivalent to over 35 treated mosquito nets for every kilometre that we travel.  The nets will be distributed by Concern Universal (http://www.concern-universal.org/home) in the most needed parts of Malawi; in many areas they work in partnership with the Against Malaria Foundation (http://www.againstmalaria.com).  Follow-up research into the work of these two charities has shown that 6 months after distribution, 97% of the nets are still being used consistently and correctly; we feel that this is an appropriate, sustainable and worthwhile cause to be supporting throughout this expedition.

Kayaking is the perfect form of self-sustainable touring transport that enables us to meet and learn from the communities that we will be helping while providing us with a tough physical challenge.  It will also allow us to learn huge amounts about the flora, fauna and wildlife of the area as we travel hundreds of kilometres up the coast of Lake Malawi.
